Self-leveling concrete is a cementitious mixture that flows easier and sets up much faster than concrete. It is a polymer-modified cement that is highly viscous and can be poured over the floor like a thick liquid. Once it’s spread out, it continues to flow evenly and levels itself out, creating a flat and even surface with minimal effort. It can work on any non-flexible surface, including wood, ceramic tiles, plywood, and concrete.
Cementitious Urethane, sometimes referred to as urethane mortar or cement is a coating system that can be applied over uncured concrete, in cold temperatures or humid environments.
Polished concrete flooring is simply a concrete floor that has been treated with a chemical densifier (to fill in the holes/pores) and ground down (like sanding wood) with progressively finer grinding tools. A sealer is then applied. And then, burnished with a high-speed buffer to required grit level.
What is Urethane Flooring? Urethane flooring systems (also known as polyurethane flooring systems) resurface concrete floors and add color to designate walkways or other markings. They can provide a several performance functions such as slip resistance, chemical resistance, and abrasion resistance.
Polyaspartic flooring is a type of protective finish specifically designed for concrete surfaces. It is notably durable, offers strong bonding capabilities, and is resistant to ultraviolet (UV) light13. Polyaspartic coatings are commonly used to enhance the appearance and functionality of concrete floors, providing an easy-to-clean surface that withstands heavy traffic, impacts, and harsh environmental conditions.
A resin flooring system is a series of industrial-strength liquid coats applied onto an existing floor. It is used primarily for defense against physical and chemical wear. The material is a two-part “glue” mixture that hardens for the final product. Safety, hygiene, aesthetics, and longevity are common reasons to use a resin floor.
Epoxy flooring is a popular choice for its durability and aesthetic appeal. It's a type of flooring that involves applying layers of a tough, long-lasting coating called epoxy to a floor surface. Here's a brief overview of what epoxy flooring is and its benefits:
What is Epoxy Flooring? Epoxy flooring is made by mixing resin with a hardener, which then forms a rigid plastic material that bonds well to most base layers and is resistant to degradation. This makes it an excellent protective layer for concrete floors.
Types of Epoxy Flooring:
Self-Dispersing Epoxy Floors: Ideal for areas with heavy vehicle traffic due to their excellent mechanical strength.
To control moisture in concrete floors, you can:
Use an appropriate vapor barrier, such as polyethylene sheeting, between the slab and the subfloor material before installing any type of flooring, including carpets.
Use a dehumidifier near the damp area to help reduce humidity levels and quickly draw out excess moisture.
Develop concrete mixes that dry more quickly.
Install subgrade vapor barriers that prevent moisture intrusion from below.
Use finishing techniques that keep the surface open to allow slab drying.
Install a vapor barrier over your concrete subfloor before installing your flooring.
Ensure that the RH level of a concrete slab is at or below 75% according to ASTM standard when testing via ASTM F2170, unless the flooring system manufacturer provides alternate guidelines.
MMA, or methyl methacrylate, is the ultimate flooring solution for rapid installations in low temperature environments. MMA flooring has numerous properties that have been proven to beneficial in food and beverage and retail industries, including, but not limited to, chemical, slip, and water resistance. The pros of this system- you can finish a floor in a very timely manner. The cons- this is a very odorous system that needs to be extremely well ventilated.
A decorative concrete overlay is a fantastic solution for restoring and enhancing worn, damaged, or discolored concrete floors.
What is It? A concrete overlay is like a fresh coat of paint for your floors. It not only looks good but also preserves the surface integrity. The overlay material is a blend of polymer resins, which includes cement, sand, and other additives. This combination creates a more durable and attractive overlay.
Application: The overlay is directly applied over existing concrete. With the addition of crack suppressant epoxy (if needed). It covers up surface imperfections and transforms the appearance of the floor. You can use overlays on both interior and exterior concrete surfaces.
Variety of Options:
Color: Overlays can be colored in various ways, allowing you to choose the perfect shade for your space.
Polished Finish: Some overlays can be polished to achieve a reflective sheen.
Customization: Stencils and stamps can be used to create unique patterns and designs on the overlay.
Base Condition: Not all existing concrete floors are suitable for resurfacing. The underlying base must be sound. If your concrete has severe cracks or other damage, resurfacing may not be the best solution.
System Selection: There are multiple overlay types available, each with its unique characteristics. Polymer-modified overlays adhere well to existing concrete and resist damage from salt, chemicals, UV exposure, freeze-thaw conditions, and abrasion1.
In summary, decorative concrete overlays offer a cost-effective way to transform your floors without the need for complete removal and replacement. Whether you want a sleek polished look or a customized design, overlays provide versatility and durability. But, still must be maintained and taken care of. This is not an invincible floor. As with all floors/flooring, maintenance is still a consideration.
